Working date for launch is 2nd February and then 1st and 3rd Thursday afternoons (2-4) thereafter. Parish Centre is booked for the moment with Burley Hall as a very welcome alternative
7. Any Other Business
- Research into carers of people with dementia – Dr Penny Wright, Leeds University, has offered to talk to us about her research; we plan to invite her and another speaker to an event during Dementia Awareness Week (15 – 21 May 2017). Action: at next meeting to agree date (Sunday 21st May? Confirmed this is not half-term) and to consider an accompanying event / speaker
- Dementia Friendly churches – update for next meeting but we are aware of conversations underway at St Mary’s, URC and Methodist churches and with Quakers. Action: Bernadette to make initial contact with Catholic church.
- Slow Shopping – discussed with examples and relative merits of a ‘slow till’ at any time versus a set time (such as Tuesday 2-4) when an extra effort is made to be accommodating. Scanner type system in Waitrose also interesting. Action: Quentin and Sylvia will continue this thinking alongside Ilkley Dementia Friends. Important to establish that there is demand for what we might ask for
- Dementia Action Alliance meeting, 12th September – report supplied by Quentin
- Farewell – A Big ‘Thank You’ to Lucy Maddison for launching us so effectively; Action: Quentin will organise a suitable form of recognition
8. Review of Action Plan
As a little time was left, we did a quick review of all the points in our action plan. Pleasingly almost every point has some action underway. Gaps and points to note are as follows:
- Action: Val and Ken are working their way round all the local businesses, focusing particularly on numbers of staff, desire for some training, and the preference for white-edged steps. Val will put the responses in a spreadsheet. A conversation about the white steps led to a suggestion that perhaps Tom Sumner on behalf of the Community Trust might offer to paint the steps without complicated conversations with landlords. Tony Pell was also mentioned. Action: Niccola to talk to the Community Trust. It was acknowledged that grab rails would also be very helpful
- The links in the action plan to be developed with Good Neighbours, Friends of Burley House Field, Sun Lane Nature Reserve and Walkers are Welcome led to the suggestion that they should be invited to attend the three imminent information sessions. Action: Niccola
- It was also suggested that we should review the status of the library and the GP surgery with literature, stickers, training and so on. Action: Niccola
- The Alzheimer’s Society checklist is not presently being used. Action: Niccola to get hold of a copy and share
- The Access Bus and Linda’s Bus need to be added to the local transport note. Action: Val to investigate more so we can share
- Bin stickers were sought but no progress had been made. Action: Val to see whether she could get spare sets from Bradford
- We have had some good contacts with the GP surgery but now would be a good time to connect again, asking about a lead and preparing the way for the Memory Tree launch. Action: Niccola
Overall, it was felt that this was very good progress for one year since launch.
