Minutes of meeting held on 25 October 2018
Present: Norah, John, Quentin, Eileen, Susan, Niccola (left part way through), Dale (left part way through), Jackie (left part way through), Val and Mary

1. Minutes of meeting 27 September 2018 – Correction: the name of the new pharmacist is Lydia Brun. Accepted as a correct record with the correction. Niccola to put on the website.
2. Matters arising:
a) Friends Together updateThey have no online presence, but Niccola has asked to be put on their mailing list and to receive the new programme.
b) GDPR and photo consentIt was agreed that a slight amendment is to be made to Part 3 of our policy to reflect that we cannot assume that people have given consent. Niccola will amend the policy on the website. Susan has not heard from Julie D. re. consent forms for photos. Susan to follow up.
3. Reports of events and visits since last meeting The Memory Treei) Review from recent sessions: October last year had the highest attendance of 18 and 17 people came to the equivalent session this year. One person came without a carer. It was agreed that carers could come on their own.
ii) Invitations to attend the Carers’ sessions: Niccola has contacted Alzheimer’s Society and Age UK.
iii) Art workshop: Greg Learmonth will come to the first meeting in January to see what people would like to do. The workshop will take place at the second meeting in January.
iv) Ideas for Christmas party – 20 December: It was thought that people would like to sing some songs. Tom Clegg and the primary schools are to be approached.
v) 2019 dates are booked.
vi) Transport options: There are a couple people who would like to come to the Memory Tree but are unable to get there by themselves. Various options were discussed as to how best to support these people. It was agreed that we would do a taxi trial using Ride Away taxis. This would run for six months. BDAG would offer to pay the full cost for the first attendance then possibly half of the cost for the following attendances, but discretion would be used. Val offered to take this on and contact the two people who are interested.
vii) Outings: Side by Side are trying to organise trips out by train and would welcome people from the MT to come along. This is being organised through the Alzheimer’s Society with Side by Side volunteers. Amy Smith is the Alzheimer’s Co-ordinator for carers.
It was agreed to offer a couple of trips a year for people attending the MT. At the next meeting people will be asked if they would like to go to Leeds Playhouse to see the Dementia friendly performance of “A Christmas Carol” on Saturday 8 December at 2pm. The ticket price is £14. Val will check to make sure there are enough places left. The Community bus or a coach would need to be hired. It was agreed that BDAG would fund the transport and subsidise the tickets by half for members of BDAG and Memory Tree, including the volunteer helpers.
The other possibility is Burley Theatre’s production of “Peter Pan” on 26 January at either 12 noon or 5pm.
4. Forthcoming eventsa) Dementia Friendly Communities cluster meeting – Wed 31 Oct, 2pm Management Suite, Airedale shopping centre, Keighley. The Alzheimer’s Society wants registered Dementia Friendly Communities (DFCs) to issue Dementia Friendly status to businesses and organisations. However, there is no official guidance and it was felt that this was needed. Julie Duerden is organising a meeting for local DFCs to get together and produce a package that they could use. Susan will go but would welcome other people to go with her.
N.B. Bradford Council has extended the funding for Julie Duerden, our Alzheimer’s Society DFC Co-ordinator, until June 2019.
b) Well Wharfedale workshop – Thurs 15 Nov 6-8pm at Ilkley Rugby clubThe aim will be to turn ideas from the last workshop into actions. Topics include dementia and wellbeing for carers. Val, Norah and Susan to go. Susan will email others to see if anyone else would like to go.
c) Safeguarding – Mon 3 Dec 7.15 – 9pm at Parish CentreJenny Price an expert in safeguarding will lead the session. BDAG has been invited. Susan will email volunteers.
d) Ladies Please Choir event – Fri 14 Dec 7.30pm at Menston Methodist church This concert will be dedicated to Ken and Val. Proceeds to BDAG. They would like someone to go and speak about the work of BDAG. Val offered to do this. Tickets £6. Susan to organise a group booking for members of BDAG and The Memory Tree.
e) Dementia Friends Information SessionsWe have four Champions who are willing to deliver some sessions. We need to find out who is interested in attending a session. Val has already done some work on this. Norah will liaise with Val and then visit shops, businesses etc to see who would be interested. They would have to be willing not only to attend a session, but to produce an action plan and to be seen to act on it before being awarded a DF sticker.
f) Annual Coffee morning – will be 10 August 2019
5.Treasurer’s Report
Bank balance as at 28 Sept was £7,417. Quentin will take his documents to Barclays to complete becoming a signatory.
6. Correspondence and Publicity
(a)Banner: It was agreed that we should have a pull up banner and one that will attach to the front of the table. Paula and Susan are working on this. Norah said we need to decide what we want on the banners and what message we want to get across.
The Shipley office of the Alzheimer’s Society has closed as the lease has run out. It is re-locating to Halifax. Because of this, Susan would like to buy some display boards. Agreed.
(b)BDAG website: this is up to date. Susan to send Niccola current DFC logo.
(c)Burley Handbook: agreed to put our information in the new handbook. Susan
(d)GP website: Their action plan is on the Leeds Dementia Action Alliance website, not Bradford’s. Susan will inform Niccola and ask her to put it on our website. Susan will also ask Niccola to ask the GPs if they will mention us on their website and put a link to us on it.
(e)Pharmacy: Susan has taken some flyers in and Lydia has said the leaflets will go in all the prescriptions.
(f)Burley Hall nursing home: The new lead on dementia is Joan Caton. Susan will go and talk to her.
7. Any Other Business
a) To consider2019 BDAG meeting dates: As Niccola had left it was agreed to discuss this at the next meeting.b) Alzheimer’s Society 2018 awards: No-one in the Bradford area has been shortlisted this year. Leeds Playhouse Youth Theatre is in the final 3 for the Youth Organisation of the Year award. c) Cllr Jackie Whiteley explained that she was the Shadow spokesperson on Bradford’s Health and Wellbeing Board. She said to let her know if there were any issues we would like her to take back to the Board and she would be very willing to do so.
