1. Minutes of meeting 25 October 2018 –Accepted as a correct record.2. Matters arising:
a) GDPR and photo consent It was agreed that a slight amendment is to be made to Part 3 of our policy to reflect that we cannot assume that people have given consent. Niccola will amend the policy on the website. Susan has not heard from Julie D. re. consent forms for photos. Susan to follow up.
3. Reports of events and visits since last meeting a) The Memory Treei) Review from recent sessions: The numbers are holding up well. Another couple have expressed an interest. Space may become a problem. May have to prioritise applicants from Burley. Poppies made at TMT were included in the village commemoration at the war memorial.
ii) Invitations to attend the Carers’ sessions: Niccola has approached several people, including Julie Duerden, to come and talk to the carers.
iii) Christmas preparations for 6 December: The decorations for the party will be made on the 6th.
iv) Christmas party – 20 December: Susan has asked Tom Clegg if he would be interested in coming and providing some musical back up to the songs. Volunteers to be asked to bring Christmas snacks along. Update Tom is unable to come this time but happy to be involved in future. Irene (keyboard) and Paul (clarinet) Fowler will accompany us. Also, a group from Burley Nursery School will entertain us.
v) Transport options: Val and Norah are to visit two people who are interested. Susan has been contacted by a single man’s family who say he may be interested in coming but they have reservations about using a regular taxi company. Paula informed the meeting that there is a private driving service called “Driving Miss Daisy” where they would always send the same driver. Susan said that she and Niccola are aware of this and would look into it.
vi) Outings: ‘A Christmas Carol’ on Saturday 8 December at 2pm. Tickets have been purchased and the coach booked. There are 30 people going. People are to be asked to bring their own drinks/snacks. Thanks to Val for organising this.‘Ladies Please’ tickets have arrived. Susan will distribute and coordinate transport.
‘Peter Pan’ on 26 January: The daytime performances are booked up, it was decided just to give flyers out.
vii) Our friend Meriel: Susan shared a piece about Meriel written by her husband, Christopher.
b) Dementia Friendly Communities cluster meeting – Wed 31 Oct
Susan attended this event. Maria Florez, the Alzheimer’s Society’s DF communities officer for Yorks and Humberside clarified the difference between the old Dementia Action Alliance and the new Dementia Friendly Communities. Susan will ask Julie Duerdin to come and explain it to us.
Currently Bradford does not have a DA Alliance but are hoping to set up a Steering Group for the new set up. Sandra Kelly of Keighley Dementia Friends is leading on producing a pack to guide local DFCs on standards for awarding DF stickers to businesses and organisations. They have a paid project worker who is doing the work. The draft pack should be available in January.
The Alzheimer’s Society has brought out a number of new booklets to help with this but will only give out one hard copy of each to individuals and groups. Agreed that this is unsatisfactory - Paula to investigate obtaining a supply for BDAG.
c) Jigsaw Festival 1-3 Nov
Susan went along and reported that they had a lot of Dementia friendly jigsaws which sold out. There will be another festival next November and they will keep BDAG in mind.
d) Well Wharfedale workshop – Thurs 15 Nov
Susan and Val attended. Dr Rayment said that she liked this definition of “Wellness is something to do, something to love and something to hope for.” They are hoping to set up a Social Enterprise to take the idea of ‘Well Wharfedale’ forward but this would have to be community led, so looking for volunteers.
It was suggested that there should be a mapping of what is available in communities that people could tap into and share ideas, rather than reinventing the wheel. Ilkley DFs already have a directory and Burley has one in progress.
4. Forthcoming events a) Safeguarding – Mon 3 Dec 7.15 – 9pm at Parish Centre Jenny Price an expert in safeguarding will lead the session. Dot is the safeguarding officer for St Mary’s church. Susan will email volunteers.
b) Dementia Friends Information Sessions We have four Champions who are willing to deliver some sessions, including Paula. We need to find out who is interested in attending a session. One of the Burley primary schools is very interested and Paula will chase this up. Once the Guidance pack becomes available, Norah will liaise with Val and then visit shops, businesses etc to see who would be interested. Niccola to liaise with The Coffee Station. Susan also suggested we redo the primary schools and the uniformed organisations. Norah’s friend Kim O’Connor is a Champion and Norah will invite her to this group.
c) Public Meeting 2019It was agreed that it is time to hold another event to raise the profile of BDAG. Agreed to aim for Sunday 12 or 19 May 2019. Susan suggested possible speakers might be Nicky Taylor from Leeds Playhouse and Wendy Mitchell who has Dementia and lives in York. Paula supported the idea to hold a big meeting for the Wharfedale cluster. She offered to help organise such an event. Susan to contact potential speakers and enquire about the Methodist church availability.
