Burley Dementia Action Group
Minutes from meeting 26th October 2017
Present: Quentin (chair), Susan, Lynne, Bernie, Niccola (minutes), John Wood (new)
Apologies: Val, Sylvia, Mary, Dale, Paula, Eileen, Ann
Minutes from 28th September meeting accepted with minor amendment of additional Burley Summer Festival information session. Action: NS to put on website
Matters arising:
- Susan, Sylvia and Paula will be attending the finalists lunch of the Dementia Friendly Communities award in London on 29th November. The responses to publicity questions have been drafted and Susan has submitted a press releases to the Ilkley Gazette which has been printed today with photograph. BDAG will cover travel expenses as required. Action: NS to get more information on the website
- the Community Matron information leaflet needs to be copied for our information table. Action: SC
Events and feedback since last meeting
- The Memory Tree
Latest session was attended by 18 people (9 couples) with 7 volunteers present. Feedback continues to be good and the group seems to be coming together very well. Donations are also starting to increase and we are financially sound for the moment. Action: all to collect Morrison’s Christmas catalogue for early December session
- Coffee morning 30th September
This was a great success, raising around £560 but it was also a lot of hard work, especially for Susan who did the bulk of it. If it is to be repeated (annually?) more people will need to be involved, including the day before
- DFC/DAA quarterly meeting
Susan had attended; see appendix for main points. One key point is that groups such as ours will be able to award Dementia Friendly status to other groups; when we know more, this will require a separate discussion on policy and standards
Forthcoming events
No information sessions are planned but Sylvia is still hoping to arrange a session with the Duke of Edinburgh students. Action: SB
Action Plan review
This was last done in November 2016 and the plan needs to be refreshed. QF had drafted some thoughts and these were accepted with some additional minor changes. The revised plan will focus on actions we are definitely planning for 2018 and will be a bit shorter in the light of our experience to date and our focus on The Memory Tree. Action: NS to redraft plan for further review at our next meeting.
Three further actions were also agreed:
Action: we should meet the new manager at Burley Hall.
Action: we need an annual review as at end December 2017 which captures our achievements and activity numbers to date; SC will send round Keighley example and QF offered to do the first draft.
Action: NS to email Community Matron Julie Page, asking her if she would attend one of our January @TMT sessions and facilitate the carers group
Treasurer’s Report
We have £4,443 in the bank with more to pay in from @TMT session donations and from the coffee morning.
Correspondence
- advice on new bin stickers from Bradford Council
- congratulations on nomination and suggestion of Dementia Friendly Fleapit Cinema at Ilkley Playhouse from Diane Smith
- article published via QF in Clare College alumnus communication. Action: NS to put on website
- West Yorkshire Playhouse re Dementia Friendly Lion, Witch & Wardrobe on Tuesday 9th January. Action: SC to see if a group from @TMT might like to attend
Any other business
Action: SC to send NS new Dementia Friends logo and NS to check we are using the correct one on website and Facebook
John Wood talked about visiting he does at Burley Hall with a lady with dementia (through St Vincent de Paul Society) and his recent attendance at Airedale NHS Trust ‘living well with dementia’ event
