Burley in Wharfedale Dementia Action Group
Minutes of meeting held on 28 March 2019
Present: Susan, Niccola, Paula, John, Val, Mary

1. Minutes of last meeting: Accepted as a correct record
2. Matters arising
a) GDPR and photo consentThe policy has been amended on the website. Niccola will make an additional amendment. Susan is working on the photo consent. It was agreed that “no photos” could be added to the lanyards that are being made. Susan to action.
b) GP action planThe link to this is on our website. Niccola has written to the Practice Manager to ask them to reference BDAG on their website but has not had a response.
3. Reports of events and visit since last meeting
a) The Memory Tree
i) Review from recent sessionsThe themes for the last two sessions were Pancake Day and Mothers’ Day. There was a good attendance with two new people including one referral from a GP. There were also three people observing from Dementia Friendly Bramhope. Discussion took place regarding the maximum number of people we could accommodate, and it was agreed to keep monitoring the numbers. We now only take new referrals from people residing in Burley.
ii) Invitations to attend the Carers’ sessionsCarly Driscoll from the Alzheimer’s Society will be coming on 4 April. Sarah Wademan from Carers’ Resource is coming on 20 June. A friend of Judith Sayer’s from Therapeutic Writing would like to attend. It was agreed to ask Judith for a bit more information so that the carers could decide if it would be helpful. Action: Susan
iii) Burley Nursery SchoolThey will be coming on 4 April for the first hour. They will be singing and it was suggested that they include some action rhymes. Susan to contact them.
iv) Memory BagsIf people have any small items that would be suitable for small, shoe size bags, please bring them to the Memory Tree. Val and Ann are co-ordinating this. Val will also ask Elizabeth what she has put in hers.
Best wishes were sent to Dr Elizabeth Anderson on her marriage. A gift will be sent on behalf of the group. Action: Susan.
b) Meeting with Dementia Friendly Ilkley Action
Susan reported back that they would like to work more closely with our group. After discussion it was decided that our focus should remain on Burley. Action: Susan to inform DFIA
c) DF Communities Cluster meeting on 27 March
Only two reps attended. Ross Collard is the new Co-ordinator but only has a two month contract. Susan is to update our DF Communities account. She informed them of our plans for Dementia Action week. Paula is to put details of her Dementia Friends session on their website.
4. Forthcoming events and dates
a) Public meeting 19 May
Paula has put this on Eventbrite. Susan will do an all members mailing and encourage people to sign up early. Posters were handed out for delivery around the village. There are also flyers available.
Someone is needed to organise the refreshments – Susan and Val to progress.
Paula and Bryan will transport Wendy Mitchell to and from the meeting.
b) DF Information sessions
Coffee Station: Niccola has spoken to Angela the owner. She would like a session, but it would have to be at 4pm after they close. Val and Paula to deliver the session.
Burley Oaks school: They would like a session. Niccola will ask Sylvia if she is able to deliver it.
Val, Norah and Jenn are to train to become Champions.
c) Dementia Action week 20 to 26 May
DFs Information sessions: Wed 22 May, 7 – 8pm, Parish Centre, Paula
Sat 25 May, 9.30 – 10.30, Parish Centre, Ruth Owen – Full Circle Funerals
Action: All to encourage attendance
d) BDAG AGM Thursday 23 May
This will be part of the normal meeting. There will be the election of officers, annual report and Treasurer’s report. People from the Memory Tree are to be encouraged to attend and think about joining the group. Niccola is the current Parish Council rep but is not standing for re-election. Niccola to ask them for a new rep after the PC elections in May.
e) Burley Festival – carried forward to next meeting due to lack of time.
5. Treasurer’s Report.
Current account stands at £6,940 as at 20 February 2019. Thanks were given to Ladies Please for a cheque of £500 raised at their December concert. Niccola will have the accounts audited for the AGM.
6. Intergenerational partnerships
Jenn has contacted Zoe Duffy who runs a care home in Shipley where children and residents interact. It has a good reputation.
7. Building Dementia Friendly Communities
Susan reported that DF Keighley has said that we can use their material at a cost of £200. No decision was taken on this. Susan distributed a booklet from the Alzheimer’s Society on “Becoming a dementia friendly retailer” and has requested copies of other DFC resources from Maria Florez. Action: Susan to email to Val and Norah.
Mark Swift the Coop manager is keen for the shop to become Dementia Friendly.

8. Correspondence and publicity
a) Banner/t shirts - agreed that the Alzheimer’s Society logo should be used as it is the official logo for DF Communities and is recognised nationally. Action: Norah
b) BDAG website updating – Niccola asked for a volunteer to take over the updating.
c) Burley Hall NH – Susan is to meet Julie Robinson the new manager.
d) Display boards/banner – these need to be purchased for 19 May event. Agreed the pull up banner should have “Burley Dementia Action Group” across the top with the Memory Tree and Dementia Friendly Communities logos below. We also need a banner for the front of a table. Val and Norah to progress.
9. Any other Business
a) Sarah Clough Space Fitness and Wellbeing initiative: Susan to meet her.
b) Bowls: Niccola said that some of the carers used to play bowls. Niccola will ask the Bowling Club if they would put on an afternoon for our group.
c) Side by Side: The Co-ordinator Kate has said that the backlog will soon be cleared and then they can begin taking referrals. She is looking for new volunteers.
