Reports of events and visit since last meeting
a) The Memory Tree
i) Review from recent sessions
The last two sessions were on Dance Halls and Ascot Race Day. These were very enjoyable but the Race Day in particular needed a lot of setting up. It would be appreciated if volunteers would come at 13.30 to help set up and ensure that we are ready to welcome members of The Memory Tree and any visitors as they arrive. It was agreed that it is good to vary the format periodically. Susan has received two emails thanking BDAG for putting on the Memory Tree.
ii) Invitations to attend the Carers’ sessions
Amanda Beck the new Community Matron has agreed to come along. Niccola to arrange.
The carers felt that Therapeutic Writing was not right for them. Susan will feed this back to Judith. Side by Side, the Alzheimer’s Society befriending service has been resumed, so Kate Woodfield, co-ordinator, will be invited to come in the Autumn. Niccola to arrange.
Paula reported that Karen Thornton from Shipley is a SPECAL practitioner in communicating with people with Dementia. Paula thought it would be good to invite her to either a carers’ session and/or provide some training for the volunteers. Susan to follow up.
iii) Memory Bags
This is progressing.
iv) Pet Therapy
Bond Barbering have offered to bring some very small ponies to the Memory Tree. They would have to be in the garden. The vicar is on sabbatical until September so Susan to ask permission to bring pets into the centre on his return.
v) Yorkshire Day – Thurs 1 August
Quentin has a book of Yorkshire sayings. We could also sing some Yorkshire songs. ALL – more ideas welcome.
b) Burley Hall nursing home
BDAG members were invited to visit the Dementia Tour Bus at Burley Hall this morning. Susan, Val and Niccola attended for a virtual tour to experience what dementia might be like.
Susan is meeting Julie Robinson, Home Manager and the Dementia Unit lead tomorrow.
c) Burley Pharmacy and Library
There does not appear to be any Memory Tree posters or flyers in the Pharmacy. Val will take some in and ask if they would like to update their Dementia Friends training. Niccola to provide the refurbished Library with a new poster and flyers.
d) Dementia Friend information open session 25 May
Ruth and Val delivered this session and 11 attended, including 2 people from Menston who were encouraged to consider helping to set up a dementia support group in their village.
e) DF Communities Cluster meeting Silsden on Tues 28 May
Susan and Val attended and confirmed that we will not pay Dementia Friendly Keighley £200 to use their Recognition Award process for businesses. Instead we will produce our own. Anna Smith the Senior Commissioning Officer for Airedale, Wharfedale and Craven and Bradford City has asked that we put our details on the Dementia Connect website. This is an Alzheimer’s Society signposting initiative. She would also like us to put all our events on the Dementia Carers.net website. Susan and Val to progress.
f) Dementia Friends Information session – The Coffee Station, 29 May
Val delivered this session and was very pleased with their enthusiasm. They will now work on their Action Plan, once Burley’s Recognition Award documents are finalised.
g) Ilkley and District Community Showcase, 5 June
A good networking opportunity that enabled us to direct several people to dementia support elsewhere. As a result of us going we have two new potential volunteers from August and came away with some new ideas for the Memory Tree. We were also given an invitation to the Beamsley Project for tea. This could be an outing.
h) Bond Barbering Cup Cake Day 14 June
This was an event to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society. They raised £114 and have donated the money to us. They will be having a pop-up Barbers at the Festival and will be collecting for our group then. Our thanks were recorded.
