Burley in Wharfedale Dementia Action Group
Minutes of meeting held on 27 February 2020
Present: Susan, Quentin, Sue, Vernon, Niccola, John, Ann, Norah, Mary, Val (later in meeting)

1. Minutes of last meeting – accepted as a correct record.
2. Matters arising
a) SPECAL Practitioner – Karen Thornton is now coming to the March meeting.
b) Christmas lights – Tom Sumner is looking to see if there is space for a small wall decoration about 1m square. The cost would be between £350 and £500. It was agreed to go ahead.
3. The Memory Tree
i) Review from recent sessions
The last two themes were Valentine’s Day and Pancake Day. Both were very enjoyable.
ii) Memory Bags
Susan has spoken to Elizabeth. Her bags are not themed. She puts two on the table at the MT sessions for people to use if they are not engaging in the planned activity. She rotates the contents and also put small bags within the larger one. All to collect suitable contents e.g. small soft toys, bits of jewellery, gem stones, old money, alphabet tiles, big beads/buttons, squidgy/feely things.
Norah said that she would make some boxes that will contains things to do with an era or theme.
iii) Pet Therapy
The cat was at the last meeting and was a big hit. Niccola will research other robotic animals.
iv) Monitoring key information for Carers
Quentin reported that this was ongoing. Susan has one paper copy of the Scottish Dementia checklist, which will be put in with the resources. Susan will also follow this up at the Peer Support Group to see if the Alzheimer’s Society is aware of an English equivalent.
Lisa has catalogued all the information we hold and will put it in files to make it more accessible. Val is following up our stationery order.
v) Angus Sturrock research studies – Angus will be visiting Sue and Vernon again for a different study.
vi) Sunflower Lanyards – 25 ID cards have been received for people to have. Contact Susan.
vii) Date for Ladies Please presentation – this will be on 5 March at 1.30pm.
viii) Background information on members – Carers will be asked to provide this. It could be used to support people who are not engaging in the MT sessions. Niccola and Janet to collect this.
ix) Song sheets - Susan is copying two more books.
4. Dementia Friends Information sessions.
Norah has done her first session with the children at Burley & Woodhead Primary school. She said that a few were quite knowledgeable.
5. Reports of Events and Visits since last meeting.
c) Wizard of Oz, Tues 14 Jan – The Playhouse has asked permission to use a photo of Myra in their publicity. Julia Prest has also asked for permission to use a photo of Susan Prest. Both were agreed.
d) Sleeping Beauty pantomime – 22 people went. The pantomime volunteers were very helpful.
e) DFCs and Dementia Champions conference 13 Feb – Val attended and went to the session on engaging with businesses and organisations. She felt that a lot was expected of volunteers. Val was hoping to get some information about signage but there was little about that. Norah says she knows a woman who works on signage and might to come and talk to the group about this. Susan said that there is dementia-friendly signage on the Alzheimer’s Society website.
f) DFCs Peer support meeting – The Alzheimer’s Society’s theme for DA week is “Isolation to Inclusion”. The DF lead for Baildon went to a conference in Durham where he heard about research going on at Newcastle University.
Bradford Face It Together Group is trialling Mystery Shopping in Shipley. Someone with Dementia goes into a shop and reports back on their experience.
6. Upcoming Events and Dates
a) Alzheimer’s Society CRISP workshop for carers – this is a carers information support programme. It begins on 24 March for 4 weekly sessions starting at 2pm at Bradford City football ground. Janet and Niccola to publicise to the carers. Susan to check if there will be any provision for people with dementia.
b) BDAG AGM – Thursday 23 April at 2pm.
Quentin and Niccola will produce the Annual Report. Quentin wishes to step down as chair so long as someone else is willing to fill the role. All posts will be up for election so if anyone would like to take on the positions of Chair, Vice-chair, Treasurer, Secretary or Minutes Secretary, please get in touch with Susan. Quentin has approached Sylvia to discuss her position as Vice-chair and she would like resign.
c) Dementia Action week 11 – 17 May – Val and Norah will be offering 1 hour Dementia Friends on 11 May at 2pm at the Parish Centre; 14 May at 11am in the Library for the volunteers and members of the public; 14 May at 7.30pm in the Parish Centre.
Monday 11 May 1-3pm there will be Afternoon Tea and Cabaret at St Johns, Ben Rhydding.
d) Community Event – NEW DATE Wendy Mitchell will be coming to the Methodist church on Sunday 5 July.
e) Tuesday lunch at Burley & Woodhead school & children’s visit to the Memory Tree – Susan will arrange the dates.
7. Treasurer’s Report
Our bank statement as at 31st January 2020 reveals a balance of £7,123.
The accounts have been audited by Duncan Ault – thanks to Duncan. There is still to come a funeral collection from Dorothy Greaves.
8. Building Dementia Friendly Communities
Update on engaging business - We need the logos to be the same as on the T shirts and banners. Susan will coordinate this for headed stationery. We also need a list of all the businesses and organisations. Val and Mary to progress.
Update on painting steps – Val has contacted various people, has permission from some and is waiting for others to come back to her.
Dementia Friendly walks - Quentin reported that there is a Tuesday walk at 10am every week for about an hour. Meet outside the Library.
There is also a newly named group, “Hi-Ho Silver Seniors” (previously “Nifty after Fifty”) at Salem Church Hall. Starts at 9am on Thursdays for an hour. This is a circuit-based class for mobility and balance.
9. Correspondence and publicity
a) Banner/T shirts – Norah will get a proof for the next meeting
b) BDAG website updating - Lisa would like to know what should go on the website.
10. Any Other Business -
a) GP surgery – The MT poster and information has been removed. Susan will follow this up and ask it they would like some DF sessions.
