2, Apologies
Susan Collins, Sue Joplin, Penny and Stan Richards, Becky Berry, Lynne Faulkes.
3. Feedback
Public meetings 26th May and 1st June
The general feeling is that the meetings went well. Around 50 new dementia friends were created and 5 new e mail contacts were given from people interested in the group
Some people asked for more in depth information. Future public meetings could involve Elizabeth Anderson from The Memory Tree or speakers from Carers Resource.
New Champions
Quentin is now a Dementia Friends Champion and is able to deliver information sessions.
New E mail address
Our new e mail address for the group is [email protected]
This will be the contact for members of the public to make enquiries and eventually to communicate with each other.
DAA website
We are on the DAA website ( www.dementiaaction.org.uk ). Bev Fletcher from the Alzheimer’s society thinks our plan is excellent and we will be invited to an awards ceremony soon to collect a certificate of recognition. The action plan can be added to as time goes on.
4. Committee Roles
Quentin is confirmed as Chair. Sylvia is Vice Chair and note taker unless absent and will send the minutes of meeting to Quentin to check and circulate to all members. Susan Collins is Group Secretary and all agreed that her local knowledge and contacts make her the perfect “eyes and ears” for the group and commented on her willingness to do “whatever is needed”!
It was confirmed that as yet there is no need for a treasurer. Regarding members’ expenditure for photocopying etc, Niccola thinks The Parish Council may help with grants and photocopying facilities. Susan will arrange a petty cash tin for money raised from events and donations.
5. Future Activities
Menston Event, especially for Carers. 14/7/16 Kirklands Menston, 2 pm – 4 pm
Lucy mentioned all invited
There will be stalls and Elizabeth Anderson from The Memory Tree will be there as well as speakers from The Alzheimer’s Society and Carers Resource. A good opportunity to forge contacts!
St Mary’s Centre. Coffee Morning. Sat. 13th August, 9 30 -11 30.
An event to raise money for the group with tombola and a modest raffle.
Burley Summer Festival Sunday August 21ST Grange Park.
A big village event with lots of visitors. The group is to have a stall in a gazebo provided by Lucy. Members of the group will man the stall. A rota will be decided at the next meeting. Susan will organise the display board from The Alzheimer’s Society and Lucy has ideas for memory games for children to enjoy.
Burley Showcase Queens Hall 17/9/16, 10 am – 12 noon
Another ideal opportunity for the group to be present and forge links. The focus will be on ‘Volunteering in Burley’
It was felt that before the summer festival and showcase it would be good to have another public meeting arranged for early October with hopefully guest speakers. This could then be publicised at these events.
Future Implementation of Action Plan
The group felt targeting of businesses is now crucial! Niccola suggested approaching the Burley Chamber of Trade and maybe attending one of their meetings. She has offered to contact them.
At some point individual businesses should be visited to explain our mission and invite them to information sessions
Val is very keen to explore painting steps locally that are problematic to negotiate. She is going to list those of concern and the group will then explore who is responsible for their maintenance to contact.
Buses.
Niccola is working hard to collate all the bus timetables and make them easier to understand. Hopefully in the future her efforts will be available for public use.
Schools and Youth Groups
It was felt that it would be good to contact these organisations regarding delivering information sessions soon, before they finalise timetables for the new school year in September. Susan has contacts with the scouts and Val with the guides. Sylvia is happy to email schools.
Local contacts
Burley in Wharfedale Handbook is published every 3 years. Niccola will work on an extract of key contacts to be laminated.
Burley in Wharfedale website.
This could have a dementia subsection with information regarding local activities eg. Well Being cafes and singing groups. Val happy to co-ordinate knowledge of local events in Burley, Ilkley, Otley and Menston.
Any other Business.
The Ownphone was discussed to promote at The Burley Showcase.
Niccola related a sad story regarding a lady in the village who Lynne encountered lost and confused in her nightwear. Who should be called to help? It was felt probably the police.
Parish Centre knitting group need spare wool to knit twiddle muffs!
Carers Resource workshops BRI Fieldhouse 14/7/16 and 28/7/16. call Carers Resource for more information.
Next Meeting: 21/7/16. 2pm St Mary’s Centre.
