Burley in Wharfedale Dementia Action Group meeting on July 21st 2016
Minutes.
4. Forthcoming Events
a) Coffee Morning. Sat 13th August 9.30-11.30, St. Mary’s Parish Centre
Susan Collins reported that plans are well underway and that she had placed posters in the village and had flyers printed for distribution. Members present took flyers and are to contact Susan as soon as possible if they can help on the day.
b) Sun 21st August Grange Park - Stall (part of the Burley Summer Festival)
The stall needs ‘manning’ by members from 10.30am until 3.00pm.
Suggested Rota.
10.30 – 11.00 Lucy and Sylvia to erect stall and Gazebo.
11.00-11.30 Sylvia
11.30-12.00 Val and Ken
12.00 -12.30 Susan
12.30-1.00 Quentin and Eileen
1.00-1.30 Niccola
1.30-2.30 Wendy
2.00 -2.30 Sylvia
2.30-3.00 Sylvia and Lucy to pack up stall and gazebo.
NB As Lucy was absent from this discussion, a mention for her to contact someone in the group if her designated duties are inconvenient.
c) Sat 17th September. Queen’s Hall, Burley Showcase (Volunteering in Burley) An excellent opportunity to promote the group’s ideas and future events with a stand with leaflets about us. It was felt that it would be a good idea to have a future date for another public event, if possible with speakers from Carers’ Resource and Elizabeth Anderson from The Memory Tree to publicise on the day. Susan is to look into speaker availability and Parish Centre availability. If a date is fixed in time for the Showcase, Sylvia will devise a flyer for publicity. A rota to ‘man’ the stall to be arranged at the September 15th meeting.
5. Implementation of Action Plan.
a) BUS TIMETABLES
Niccola still working to collate the information. Not easy!! Niccola also mentioned using Google Maps to click on to a bus stop and obtain live information about buses due!!
b).CONTACTING SCHOOLS AND YOUTH GROUPS
Sylvia has started to contact these groups and has had some response which needs following up after the school summer holiday.
(c)BURLEY IN WHARFEDALE WEBSITE
Niccola has organised a subsection on the website for the group to post information about our action plan and forthcoming events. Quentin has agreed to update the action plan.
(d) LOCAL ACTIVITY
Quentin has produced a comprehensive leaflet with information about local activities and events available for people with dementia and their carers to attend. It was felt that this would be an ideal page to go on the website.
Val and Ken have started to visit local businesses to look at their access from a dementia friendly point of view. 8 businesses so far have engaged in conversation regarding painting their steps. As they are all in rented properties this needs some research as to how to proceed! However Val felt it was a good start to engaging with local businesses.
(e) BADCOT (Burley and District Chamber of Trade)
The next BADCOT meeting for 27/7/2016 was discussed. Quentin and Sylvia agreed to attend the meeting to promote the group’s vision to more businesses and to report back
6. AOB
Quentin is to deliver a dementia friends information session as a champion to the Leeds Area Quaker Meeting at Rawdon Meeting House on Sunday October 9Th at 1pm. He is hoping a fellow champion can join him for this.
Susan and Quentin are to attend a Dementia workshop at BRI Field House on 28th July and will report back to the group.

There is a possibility that Elizabeth Anderson can facilitate the creation of a Memory Tree Group in Burley in Wharfedale. This very exciting prospect is going to be explored by Susan. If possible the launch would be January 2017 as volunteers would need training. This could be promoted at the Burley Showcase.
Susan suggested forging links with a new, soon to be appointed, Family Liaison Officer at the Methodist Church.
Susan also mentioned a friend of hers who feels that more benches are needed in the village as a whole for everyone, not just people with dementia. Niccola mentioned that Parish Council funding may be available.
ICE The group was reminded of this facility on mobile phones IN CASE OF EMERGENCY!
MEMORY WALK. A proposed memory walk was discussed as maybe part of next year’s Burley Festival.
